Guilford softball gets split with Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. – Sara Cranford’s two-run homer in the eighth inning capped
Meredith College’s 10-8 comeback win over Guilford College and split
Sunday’s nonconference softball doubleheader.

Guilford (4-4) won the opener, 2-0, behind Jessica Burcham’s six-hit
shutout. The Quakers carried a 7-3 lead into the Avenging Angels’ (3-7) last
at-bat, but Meredith tied the game with four runs in the seventh.

Winning pitcher Arielle Stout (2-4) hit a two-run double in the seventh and
scored the game-tying run on Ashley Green’s two-out single. One batter
later, Green was thrown out at home by Kimberly Keys on Kristen Piner’s
single, which sent the game to extra innings.

Keys’ sacrifice fly scored Ami Hutcherson and gave the Quakers an 8-7 lead
in the eighth, but Meredith rallied again. Jordan Zachmeyer tied the game
with a one-out RBI single and scored one batter later when Cranford drove a
Jessica Rowland (0-3) offering over the center field fence for her first
homer of the season.

Zachmeyer was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Teammate Emily Cooke had three hits,
three RBI, scored three times and had a stolen base. Stout did not allow a
hit in 3.1 innings of relief. She worked around four walks and struck out

Guilford’s Cynthia Hayes enjoyed a perfect afternoon at the plate. After a
3-for-3 effort in the opener that included an RBI single, the rookie went
4-for-4 with a stolen base in the nightcap. Julie Langseth had a pair of
hits and three runs batted in for the Quakers.

Guilford visits North Carolina Wesleyan College Wednesday in a nonconference
