Eastern Guilford Wildcats edge Grimsley Whirlies in Thriller

Eastern Guilford 7
Grimsley 6

Special to Greensborosports.com:

Grimsley LHP Kito Carrig pitched four strong innings with three strikeouts but saw
the 2-0 Whirlie lead evaporate in the fifth inning behind several costly errors and
key hitting by the Wildcats. Carrig left the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning. Starting Grimsley catcher Sawyer Highfill came to the mound in relief and pitched the last two innings for the Whirlies. Eastern Guilford plated six runners in the pivotal fifth inning with LF Hayden Holleman leading the way.

Wildcats RHP Kyle Lunsford kept Eastern Guilford close early while only allowing 2
runs on 4 hits through 5 1/3 innings but left in the sixth with the bases loaded.
Eastern Guilford took a 6-2 lead into the sixth but Grimsley 3B Ryan Stoneman
sparked a Whirlie comeback with a single followed by a long drive to center field by Eric Stevens that caromed off the wall narrowing the lead to 6-4 after six innings.

In Grimsley’s last at bat, back to back singles by Kory Shumate and Sawyer Highfill were followed by a long fly ball by Kyle Smith that was mishandled by a Wildcat outfielder allowing the tying run to score. The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the seventh with a Ryan Hackett double, Adam Gunn was intentionally walked and Hackett advanced to third base on a wild pitch.

Will Oates proved to be the Wildcats hero of the night as he was jammed with an inside fastball but fought it off for a blooper to shallow center field for a walk off, game-winning single.

Grimsley senior Sawyer Highfill took the loss for the Whirlies. Eastern Guilford
pitcher Adam Doyle was credited with the win. It was the first game for both teams.

  1. Watch these Wildcats this year…loaded w/ junior talen and ready to make some noise.

  2. I like what I saw from the Whirlies. They were crusin and in control for 6 out of 7 innings but a couple of errors opened the floodgates in the 1 inning. This is why baseball is such a great and humbling game. Just when you think you have things under control and figured out, it turns quickly and rolls the other way. Big conference game at Grimsley on Friday vs Southeast.

  3. I agree with eg supporter. This wildcat team is flying completely under the radar. I saw their JV won the conference last year. They also had a great summer in GSO colt league. This is a gritty team with no real superstars or standouts, but with the right coaching, and some good pitching this team is a real threat.

I heard that EG got a new varsity coach, does anyone know if that is true?

  4. yes the wildcats have a new head coach. coach white, who had coached jv for the past 4 or 5 years, moved up to replace the retired coach brady. the jv team has been very successful the last two seasons as well as the summer colt team. team is made up of mostly juniors, some of which have been on varsity since freshmen. they only have three seniors, but they are all solid players who will contribute. senior pitcher started last night and another senior knocked in winning run. but with all the juniors, wildcats are looking good this year and next year.
