Guilford College golf falls to second in playoff at Southern Pines

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Cape Fear Community College won on the second hole of a 10-man playoff to win the Pine Needles Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Pine
Needles Resort.

Cape Fear shot 301 in Tuesday’s second and final round and tied first-round
leader Guilford College with a 609 total. The Quakers, which started the day
with a three-shot lead over Cape Fear, shot 304 Tuesday.

Washington and Lee University’s Tim Gavrich shot a one-over-par 72 Tuesday
and pulled out a one-shot victory over four students, including Cape Fear’s
Clayton Woody and Scott Novicki. Gavrich, who started the round in fourth
place, shot 148 for the tournament. Woody shot 72 Tuesday and Novicki shot
73 to help Cape Fear rally to tie Guilford after 36 holes.

First-round leader Mike Redwood of Bridgewater College shot 77 Tuesday and
finished in a sixth-place tie with Guilford’s Mat Hennick at 150. Guilford’s
Noah Ratner (77-76-153) and Dusty Roberts (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham
County) (76-77-153) shared eighth place.

The Quakers, ranked first in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division III
Coaches’ Poll and the Golfstat.com Head-to-Head Rankings, return action Mar.
25-27 in the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate.
