Tobias (SEG) vs Stoneman (GHS) in Classic Pitching Duel

Southeast Senior Josh Tobias and Grimsley Junior Ryan Stoneman each took the mound
Friday night and turned in stellar pitching performances in the first Metro 4A match-up
for each team. Both right handed hurlers kept opposing batters off balance all
night and used the entire plate to their advantage. The two pitchers had very
similar numbers as each spread out only four hits over five complete innings of
work. Tobias struck out five Whirlies and Stoneman fanned four Falcons. Each
pitcher struck the other one out. The difference in the outcome of the game was the
infield play behind the two aces. The Southeast infield of 3B Austin Bain, SS Dylan
Shutt, 2B Blake Butler and 1B Dillon Barker played flawless defense all game and
made the big plays when necessary. Whirlie Catcher Sawyer Highfill homered to left
field in the bottom of the first inning as Grimsley took a quick 1-0 lead. Grimsley
defense held for three innings until Tobias got the first Falcon hit of the night
off Stoneman, a single to shallow left. With two outs in the same inning, a Taylor
Callahan line drive was misplayed at first base which allowed the Falcons to even
the score at 1-1. Grimsley defense committed an error in fourth inning which lead
to a Falcon run. The Whirlie infield committed 2 more errors in the fifth inning
leading to 2 more Falcon runs. A total of five Grimsley errors lead to all four
Southeast unearned runs. Dylan Shutt relieved Tobias and Sawyer Highfill relieved
Stoneman for the final two innings. Tobias got the win for the Falcons. Stoneman
took the loss with an ERA of 0.00. Grimsley SS Kory Shumate was the only player for
either team with multiple hits, he went 2-4.

Final score was Southeast over Grimsley 4-1.

  1. Too many errors for Grimsley. Josh pitched a very good game. Need to get and keep those bats hot as we face two good teams next week. Southern Alamance looms on Friday…should be a good game.

SE JV’s won 11-0 in 5 on strong pitching by Christian Banda.

  2. Good pitching by both young men last night. Grimsley is missing two starters that will return shortly. DJ Reader and Aaron Jones should be back by end of next week. That should eliminate some of these errors by kids that are playing out of position now.

  3. Opps you are right GBB the Grimsley pitching was very strong last night. Didn’t realize you had 2 starters out. You guys should have a strong varsity team this year.

  4. Tobias is decent. Stoneman is a rising star and pitched a great game. southeast only scored off of errors. Go Whirlies
