Guilford Wins Twice On First Day of Spring Break Trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Guilford College’s softball team extended its season-best winning streak to four with convincing wins over the Pennsylvania State University at Hazleton and Cedar Crest College Monday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Quakers (8-4) won their first game, 22-0, in five innings over the Lions (0-3). Guilford’s 22 runs and 22 hits both rank second in school history. Senior Courtney Kozar had three hits, including a double and two triples. She tied the school record with five runs scored and also knocked in a career-high six runs, which stands second all-time at Guilford. Teammate Morgan Andrews also had three hits, including two doubles, and plated a career-high five runs. The Quakers’ Kimberly Keys went three-for-three with a double and two RBI.

The offensive outbust was more than enough for the pitching tandem of Jessica Burcham and Emily Willis. Burcham improved to 5-0 with three perfect innings and Willis allowed only a fourth-inning single to Alyssa Rodzewich, the Lions’ lone baserunner.

Guilford’s hit parade continued in the day’s second game, a five-inning 22-1 rout of Cedar Crest (1-1). The Quakers jumped on the Falcons for 15 first-inning runs and never looked back. Guilford again posted 22 runs and 22 hits, which stand second in school history. The teams’ 22 RBI is a new school standard. Andrews was three-for-five with four RBI and three runs scored. Cynthia Hayes went three-for-three with a triple and two RBI. Sarah Cutright doubled twice and Ashley Boteler knocked in three.

Shelby Bowser (1-1) yielded an unearned run in the first and fanned five in four innings.

Guilford resumes its spring break trip Wednesday (3/9) with two games against Susquehanna University, a 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament participant.
