College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 12, Vassar 4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College outscored visiting Vassar College, 9-2, in the second half of its 12-4 men’s lacrosse win Wednesday. The Quakers are 4-1 for the first time since 2002 after sending the undermanned Brewers (0-2) to their second loss.

Henry Farley’s four points led a balanced effort that produced nine different Quakers’ goal scorers. Farley set up Chris Ashcraft’s second-quarter tally 3:59 before halftime that gave Guilford the lead for good. The pair hooked up again for Ashcraft’s second goal of the day 1:29 into the third quarter. The Quakers outscored the Brewers, 6-1, in the frame. Consecutive tallies by Chase Clausen and Chris Sisk in the final 16 seconds gave Guilford an 8-3 edge through three quarters.

Ryan Hart tallied 15 seconds into the fourth quarter, which pulled Vassar to within 8-4, but the Brewers drew no closer.

Farley finished with two goals and two assists. Ashcraft and Clausen both chipped in with two goals and one assists. Greg Nash added a goal and two helpers. Sam Newland won nine-of-16 face-offs and Dale Wray won all four draws to help Guilford control possession. Mark Guillen had six saves in just under 55 minutes.

Sam Seymour scored twice for Vassar and Andrew Nicol had nine saves in goal. The Brewers, who used only 12 students in the game, played without 2010 all-region defender Zach Beauchamp.

Guilford entertains the University of the South Friday (3/11) at 1:00 p.m. in the Armfield Athletic Center.
