Western Guilford edges Grimsley 4-3 in Double-Fest

Hornet starting pitcher Nino Marrero bent but did not break against the Whirlies in
a Metro 4A match-up marked by a combined total of 8 doubles hit by both teams.
Grimsley 3B Ryan Stoneman staked the Whirlies to an early 1-0 lead in the second
inning with a stand-up RBI double to left field scoring 2B Kyle Smith who had
doubled earlier in the inning.

Grimsley lefty Quito Carrig pitched well, striking out three Hornets and holding
the one run lead until the fourth inning when Hornet LF Matt Lowe connected with an
RBI double to even the score. The Hornets took the lead adding 3 more runs in the
fifth inning on no hits and two costly Grimsley errors. Eric Stevens relieved
Carrig in the pivotal fifth inning and struck out Hornet 1B Tyler Parr with the
bases loaded.

Brandon Ahrens came into pitch for the Hornets in the sixth inning as Whirlie 1B
Seth O’Fallon hit a flare into shallow right field that was mishandled by the
Hornets allowing Eric Stevens to score and narrow the Hornet lead to 4-2. The
Whirlies staged a comeback in the seventh inning against Hornet closer Nin Marrero
when Sawyer Highfill drilled an RBI double off the outfield fence to score CF Aaron
Jones. Whirlie 2B Kyle Smith then reached on a walk but was doubled-off first base
when Eric Stevens hit a line drive ending the Whirlie comeback and sealing the win
for the Hornets.
