College Baseball – Guilford sweeps Hampden-Sydney

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kyle Wooden went eight-for-nine with four doubles and six RBI in Guilford College’s doubleheader sweep of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Hampden-Sydney College Saturday. The Quakers (6-12, 2-2 ODAC) banged out 49 total hits in 15-11 and 18-3 victories over the Tigers (11-10, 2-4 ODAC).

Beau Flinchum’s three-run double highlighted a five-run Hampden-Sydney first in the opener, but Guilford answered with four in the bottom of the frame, thanks in part to Wooden’s three-run homer, his first of the season.

Ben Esser’s first college homer gave Guilford a 6-5 lead in the third, but Hampden-Sydney regained an 8-7 lead with a three-run fifth that included Flinchum’s RBI double. The Quakers answered with five hits and four runs in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead for good, 11-7.

Wooden, a senior first baseman, matched his career high with five hits in the opener, his first game back in the starting lineup since a Feb. 27 foot injury. He doubled twice and finished with four RBI. Teammate Kent Peterson had a double among his career-high four hits and Zach Montalbano was three-for-six with a double and two RBI. D.J. Phillips also had three hits for the Quakers. Zach Daw (2-1) earned the victory with five innings in relief. Sammy Stuart worked out of an eighth-inning jam and pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Hampden-Sydney’s Flinchum was three-for-four with two doubles and four RBI. Teammate Alan Brownell doubled three times and Hunter Lewis added three hits and three RBI.
Wooden and his teammates picked up where they left off in game two as the Quakers jumped out to a 12-1 lead after two innings. Guilford had 27 hits in the contest, their most in a game since 2004.

Wooden doubled twice among his three hits and had two more RBI. Phillips, Montalbano and Jay Cox all had a career-high four hits in the game. Montalbano also scored three times and had three RBI. Esser was two-for-five with a personal-best four RBI. Borja Jones-Berasaluce (1-2) earned his first college win by allowing three runs and seven hits over seven innings.

Patrick Kuhns had two of Hampden-Sydney’s seven hits in the game. Erik Hermann hit a pinch-hit homer to lead off the Tigers’ seventh inning.

Guilford hosts Roanoke Wednesday in a 3:30 p.m. ODAC game.
