Guilford runs season-best win streak to five games and Quakers blast out a 26-5 win in opener of doubleheader….

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s baseball team ran its season-best
winning streak to five with a pair of nonconference wins over the University
of Maine at Farmington Friday. Forrest Steed’s grand slam and career-high
seven runs batted in (RBI) highlighted the Quakers’ 26-5 opening game win
that was halted after five innings. Derek Hardison and Bryan Bialecki both
had two hits in Guilford’s 10-6 triumph in the nightcap.

After striking for five runs in the day’s first inning, Guilford scored 15
runs in the second inning, all with two outs. After Zach Montalbano grounded
out, the Quakers (9-12) had 17 consecutive batters reach base, 12 via a base
hit. Steed, the inning’s 15th batter, made his first college home run a
memorable one with a grand slam that opened an 18-1 lead.

Guilford’s D.J. Phillips was four-for-four with two doubles and three RBI.
Teammate Jay Cox finished with two hits and four RBI. Alex Pecevich (1-0)
earned his first win of the season with four innings of work on the mound.

The Quakers took advantage of four Maine-Farmington errors in the nightcap
for a 10-6 win. Travis Starbuck’s RBI double in the third inning opened a
6-1 lead, but the Beavers (0-3) rallied to within one with four runs in the
fourth inning. Micah Denny (1-1) quelled the comeback with four strikeouts
in 3.1 innings of relief and earned his first college victory.

Brian Jenkins and Jack Macvane both had three hits for Maine-Farmington.
Josh Garmeau added two hits and two RBI.

Guilford entertains Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Washington and
Lee University Saturday at noon at McBane Field.
