High School Baseball Bulletin Board for 3/18/11

Games on tap for tonight and it looks like this will be a real busy evening:

Southwest Guilford at Northwest Guilford….7pm…I may be a bit off base, but I would say going in, this might just be the Game of the Night….The loser of this one will have some major ground to make up, in their pursuit of Glenn and East Forsyth…..

Western Guilford at Dudley….7pm…Dudley has lost to SEG and Southern Alamance in conference and Western has beaten Grimsley and leads Southern 5-2….

Page at Southern Alamance….7pm…Page topped Smith last night and fell to Grimsley back on Monday and tonight they get the next shot at SA….

Grimsley at Smith….7pm…Grimsley has picked up some life after starting out at (0-3), the Whirlies have won two straight this week, with the 6-5 win over Page and the 8-4 victory last night in Jamestown vs. Ragsdale….

Ragsdale at East Forsyth…..7pm…There will be a whole host of fellow Piedmont 4-A Conference members pulling for Ragsdale tonight, as they go to Kernersville and try and knock off the favored EF Eagles….This could really keep the conference spinning, if Ragsdale could end up winning and it would make second place, seem like it was the place to chase in the conference race, especially with the start that Glenn has gotten off to this week with victories over SWG and NWG….

Northeast Guilford at Southwestern Randolph….7pm…NEG is probably the top team in Guilford County right now and with just one loss, they can keep that record going and growing tonight, as they head deeper into conference play….NEG’s lone loss was that 7-6 season opener to Western Alamance and after that the Rams have been on a roll….Harrison Phillips, not to be confused with Harrison Barnes, but equally as important to his team at NEG, was out of the lineup at Western on Tuesday and they need him back out there, to make a legitimate run at a State Title…Luis Paula was just DH’ing at WG, after being hit by a pitch at home vs. Dudley, last Friday night….NEG is strong and with Jaylin Davis and Johnny Brown and the McCanns hitting the ball hard it will be hard to beat Northeast and catcher Cole Wyrick has been a big surprise behind the plate, allowing Jacob McCann to move to the outfield, to shore up the Ram defense and Jordan Brown gives NEG another solid bat in their lineup….Add in the man who is so small you might just miss him, in Josiel Colon and you have yourself a real contender in NEG….Colon is doing many different things to help Northeast….This team has a chance and others do to, but right now they might just be on the best road, to doing what NEG did back in 1965 and 1966, when they won State Titles, or in 1967 when they finished second in the State 3-A’s….

Nothern Guilford at McMichael….6pm…Got see NG for the first time this season back on Tuesday and they looked pretty darn good to me…Austin Hardin is the real deal and James Hudson hit two home runs for the Nighthawks at Eastern Guilford in the conference win….Nighthawks can still make some noise, but it will come down to their pitching….Young pitching in the form of Austin Coltrane, will have to help carry them down the road….

Eastern Guilford at Rockingham County…7pm…The Wildcats have to get back in the Hunt tonight and maybe Tyler Hunt can come up with a big game this evening for EG… Or possibly Will Oakes, Adam Gunn, or Adam Smith or Ryan Hackett or Jordan Robertson or others….

Trinity at High Point Central….5pm…The Bison return home today, after their victorious road trip down Kivett Drive to Southern Guilford, on Thursday….Bison enter at (2-3) and Coach Morgan has these kids thinking winning baseball….Senior Seth Beane is having a very productive year and Lucas Hess came up with a big three-run double yesterday afternoon at Southern….Zach McClain also had a Bison-booster type day, going 2-3 against the Storm pitching…

Southern Guilford at Asheboro….7pm…Relief pitcher Zack Canada came on strong for the Storm yesterday and he’ll have to help his team out at the plate today, along with Owen Short, Daniel Jones and other Storm troopers…..

Glenn at WS Parkland….6pm…Right now everyone in the Piedmont 4-A is trying to catch Glenn, but don’t look for the Mustangs to run down the Bobcats tonight…Glenn is going to be hard to stop….When Noah Pearl gives it a whirl, these ‘Cats will tough to unfurl and their furr is pretty thick too, after the long, hard winter….

West Stokes at Bishop McGuinness…4pm….We’ll keep a sideways eye/view on this one, with the Bishop Villains’ Mike and Matt Urban appearing to be a very tough one-two power punch and pitching punch…..

  1. What a game in Asheboro this afternoon — a horrendous call on a two out caught/dropped line drive aided Asheboro as they come from behind to beat Southern Guilford in the bottom of the sixth inning. This game was worth way more than the price of my admission — these two teams(pitchers were both very good) battled the entire game and it was well played by both teams. I don’t have the stats, however, it was a great game! The Storm coaches and players handled themselves with class during the controversy –it will pay off down the road! One of the better games I have watched in a long time.

  2. FCDS beat Westchester 13-4, S. Constable 2-4 2b, Arendas 1-3 2rbi , Carter 2-4 2rbi, Culbret h 1-4, Deluca 2-3 2b, Dunn 2-4 hr 2b 5rbi, Key 1-3, Adam Griffin winning pitcher, close game through 5 innings then Forsyth went on a run in the 6th
