Greensboro Athletics Excited Ready to Roll
Greensboro Athletics Ready For 2011, GreensboroNABA

The Greensboro Athletics are expecting big things in 2011 as the team
prepares to compete in the inaugural season of the Greensboro NABA, Greensboro’s
premiere adult baseball league. The prospect of a league with new teams
and better competition is an exciting prospect to many of the players on the
Athletics.
“The new league is definitely something to be excited about,” said
Athletics third baseman Jeff Gantt. “A lot of hard work has been put in by a lot
of good people to get the new NABA up and running. It will be a league that
people will be proud to be apart of.”
To the Athletics veterans like Brad Oliver, entering his 11th season,
Bradley Willard, entering his 8th season, Jeremy Cumbo, entering his 7th
season, Steve Shanahan, entering his 5th season, and Gantt, entering his 11th
season, the goal is still the same as it has always been.
“Business as usual,” said Gantt. “We will go out and compete like we
always have and hopefully contend for a championship.”
The Athletics pitching staff will once again be anchored by 3rd year
player Mark Welch. Welch coasted to a 12-1 record last season with 63 strikeouts
in 74 2/3 innings and an ERA of 3.11. Calling the shots behind the plate
will be Adam Stone, who will be entering his 4th season with the club. Stone
spent most of last season at shortstop, but excitedly welcomes the chance
to get back behind the plate.
The Athletics had a vastly talented rookie class last season and will
gladly welcome back Jason Allred, Chris “Strut” Carter, and Justin Skinner who
add depth not only to the outfield ranks, but to the pitching staff as
well. Derek Shanaberger, who only played 2 games with the Athletics last season
will join the team full time for the 2011 season, adding depth to the
infield and the pitching staff alike.
The Athletics were left with some holes to fill this offseason, but
manager Wayne Gantt has worked diligently to fill these roster spots with some
talented players that are ready to contribute immediately with the club. The
Athletics would like to officially welcome Josh Trogdon, Trevor Brackett,
Ian Hansson, and Lee Penland to the club.
With a mix of veterans and talented young players, the Athletics enter the
2011 season with high hopes, looking to make an impact in the new
Greensboro NABA right away……
