Baseball Final – Averett 7, Guilford 3

DANVILLE, Va. – Matt Mitchell fanned five in 5.2 innings and raised his record to 5-0 in Averett University’s 7-3 baseball win over visiting Guilford College Wednesday. Mitchell worked around eight hits and two walks for his team-leading fifth win of the season.

Jordan Kidd and Jimbo Newcomb both had two hits and two RBI for the Cougars (21-15), who won for the 13th time in 17 games.

Kidd had a sacrifice fly and Jason Carter hit an RBI single in the first inning as Averett scored twice off of Guilford starter Will Henschel (0-3) in the first inning. The Quakers (14-17) answered with a run in the second on Zack Montalbano’s RBI hit, but the Cougars tacked on single runs in the second and third frames to open a 4-1 lead.

Kyle Wooden’s two-out RBI double in the sixth drew Guilford to within 5-3, but Kidd and Newcomb had two-out, RBI hits in the seventh that provided the game’s final margin. Averett relievers Tyler Long and Tyler Muench combined to keep Guilford scoreless for the final 3.1 innings.

Guilford visits Greensboro College Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
