Golf Results – Guilford Takes Fourth at Emory Spring Invitational

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Host Emory University rallied to win its own Emory Spring Invitational Tuesday at the Stonemont Golf Club. The 11th-ranked Eagles started the day in second place, three shots behind first-round leader Greensboro College. Fueled by tournament medalist Jonathan Chen’s one-under-par 69, Emory shot 296 Tuesday and topped the 17-team field by three strokes.

Oglethorpe University jumped from fourth place to second with a 298 Tuesday. Greensboro finished third at 599 after shooting 304 in the final round. Top-ranked Guilford College fired a 309 Tuesday and took fourth, four strokes in front of Christopher Newport University.

Chen (73-69-142) shot the tourney’s low round Tuesday and won the individual title by three shots over Oglethorpe’s Eric Quinn, who shot 72-73-145. Greensboro’s Michael Elder (71-75-146) shared third place with Emory’s Ryan Dageman (73-73-146). Oglethorpe’s Craig Stevenson placed fifth with a 36-hole 147 thanks to Tuesday’s 71, which was second only to Chen’s 69 Tuesday.

Guilford’s Noah Ratner placed eighth (73-77-150), one shot in front of teammate Mat Hennick (75-76-151). Alex Wise (Eden, N.C./Carlisle School (Va.)) shot 77 Tuesday and finished in a tie for 19th place at 153. The Quakers’ J.T. Thomas had Guilford’s fourth score Tuesday (79) and placed 29th with 155. Dusty Roberts (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County) also had 155 for the tournament. Playing as an individual, rookie Jon Montgomery (Germanton, N.C./South Stokes) finished in 26th place after shooting 74 Tuesday for a two-day 154.

Guilford is ranked first in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll and in the Golfstat.com Division III Relative Rankings. This week’s tournament featured six of the top-11 teams in the Golf World Poll, including second-ranked Methodist University, which shot 308 and is in sixth place after one round.

The Quakers are back in action next Sunday (4/17) at the 54-hole Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships at the bay Creek Resort in Cape Charles, Va.
