Softball Finals – Guilford 4-1, Averett 5-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashley Boteler’s two-hit shutout of visiting Averett University helped Guilford College’s softball team salvage a split of Wednesday’s nonconference doubleheader with the visiting Cougars.

Kimberly Keys’ run-scoring double in the first accounted for the game’s lone run as the Quakers won for the 10th time in 12 games, 1-0, in five innings. Averett won the opener, 5-4, in the traditional seven innings, to snap a six-game losing streak.

Averett (20-18) grabbed to a 2-0 first-inning lead in the opener on Brooke Hensley’s two-run double that scored two unearned runs. Hensley’s third hit of the game was an RBI double in the fourth that opened a 5-0 Cougars’ edge before Guilford rallied.

The Quakers (23-13) scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings off of reliever Dannielle Emerson to pull within 5-4. Guilford put runners on first and third in the sixth against Lauren Daniel, but catcher Emily Atkinson threw out Shelby Bowser trying to steal second and Julie Langseth was forced out at the plate on Autumn Yoder’s fielder’s choice. Daniel got out of the jam by retiring the Quakers’ top hitter, Cynthia Hayes, on a groundout to second.

DeFilippo (13-13) re-entered the game to pitch the seventh inning and retired the heart of Guilford’s lineup in order for her 13th win of the season.

Hensley and Daniel both finished with three hits in game one. Atkinson and Molly Nanney both added two hits for Averett.

Sarah Cutright and Hayes had two hits apiece for the Quakers. Pitcher Jessica Burcham (12-5) was touched for 11 hits and five runs, three earned, in a complete game.

While the Cougars hit Burcham, they couldn’t get to Boteler (7-3). The rookie right-hander yielded a double to Atkinson and a single to Hensley in the first, but then retired 13 of the game’s final 14 batters for her seventh win of the season.

Emerson (0-3) worked the five-inning second game for Averett and gave up four hits, two to Keys.

The Quakers conclude their regular season Saturday (4/16) at 1:00 p.m. against visiting Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Virginia Wesleyan College.
