Men’s Lacrosse Final – Lynchburg 18, Guilford 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Derek Sweet scored three times and Dylan Hoff added a goal and five assists in visiting Lynchburg College’s 18-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win over Guilfrod College Saturday night.

Sweet scored a natural hat trick to cap the Hornets’ (9-5, 3-2 ODAC) game-opening 8-1 run. Andrew Wilfong started the burst with two man-up goals in the first four minutes. Lynchburg took advantage of three Guilford penalties and scored three of their five man-up goals in the opening period.

Guilford’s Chris Sisk tallied with 3:22 left in the second quarter made it an 8-2 game at halftime, but Lynchburg outscored the Quakers, 10-0, in the second period. The Hornets reeled off four goals in the final 2:41 of the third period and took a 15-2 lead into the final quarter.

Lynchburg’s Jeff Schwartz won 13 of 17 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls in a dominant midfield performance. The Hornets captured 16 of the game’s 24 draws and outshot the Quakers, 43-19. Thirteen different students scored for the Hornets, including Ben Sauer and Chris Eggeling, who both had two goals and an assist.

Sisk and Henry Farley netted the Quakers’ goals. Mark Guillen made eight saves in goal, two in each quarter. Trey Atkinson had a game-high three caused turnovers and Sam Newland led Guilford with three ground balls.

The Quakers close their regular season Wednesday against nationally ranked league-rival Roanoke College at 5:30 p.m.
