College Track and Field Results – Guilford Men Finish 4th, Women 7th at ODAC Championships

SALEM, Va. – Guilford College’s men’s track and field team placed fourth out of seven teams at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships Saturday at Roanoke College. The Quakers’ women finished seventh of seven at the same meet.

Guilford’s men earned three individual titles and set three school records at the meet. Event winners garnered First Team All-ODAC recognition, the runners-up were named Second Team All-ODAC and third-place finishers received honorable mention.

– Junior Derick Kosgei successfully defended his title in the 5,000-meter run with a winning time of 15 minutes, 26.04 seconds. Teammate Chad Norton was third in the race in 15:49.04.
– Freshman sprinter Johnathan Smith (Conyers, Ga./Salem) claimed the 200-meter dash crown in 21.82 seconds, the second-fastest time in school history. He ran the best qualifying time in the 100, but was disqualified in the final.
– Rookie Dylan Skinner (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange) won the 800 in a school-record time of 1:54.02. His time beat the previous mark of 1:55.0 set by Ken Bailey ’72 in 1972.

In addition to Skinner’s mark, teammate Sean White (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) set the Guilford standard in the 1,500 with a second-place time of 3:59.33. His time broke Bailey’s converted time of 4:00.1 set in a 1972 mile run. Sophomore Joshua Farrar (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) ran the 400 in a record time of 50.70 seconds, which placed fourth in the race.

Farrar, White and Skinner joined Michael Mellinger on the Quakers’ 1,600 relay team that finished third in 3:25.35.

David Cason (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a season-best 9:44.10, less than a second behind Lynchburg College’s Daniel Cutright.

Freshman Taylor Stokes (Advance, N.C./Davie County) placed fourth in the 5,000 to highlight the Quakers’ women’s team’s effort. She ran the race in 19:23.04. Other highlights include Christina Murra’s school-record time of 1:23.66 in the 400 and Jackie Grant’s sixth-place throw (88’5”) in the javelin.

The Quakers are back in action Apr. 28-30 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
