Grimsley vs Northwest, the Rematch: Two of the Premier HS Lacrosse Programs in the State Meet Again

Guilford County is home to two of the premier men’s high-school lacrosse programs in
the State of North Carolina. It is only fitting that these two rivals meet once
again on Friday evening in the third round of the NCHSAA Playoffs. This upcoming
Sectional match-up is familiar territory for both of these Conference 7 members as
Grimsley eliminated an undefeated Northwest squad last season in an
emotionally-packed, overtime Sectional contest. The Whirlies 2010 season ended one
win shy of the state championship game with a loss at Myers Park in the Regional
finals.

This season, Northwest has its sights firmly set on its own Regional berth and a
chance to hoist the state championship trophy at Wake Med Park on May 14th. The
Vikings have a 17-2 record, a conference championship and a high-powered offense
averaging 13 goals per game. Led by Jay Goldsmith (attack), Cole Abourjilie
(attack), John Pappas (midfield), Kyle Dorr (attack), the Vikings are ranked #3 in
the state. The two losses came at the hands of #1 Lake Norman and conference foe
Western Guilford.

Grimsley has a 12-4 record and has won its first two playoff games on the road by
beating Northern Guilford and Bishop McGuinness. Led on offense by Taylor Thilo
(attack), Hunter Huffman (midfield), Aaron Jones (midfield), Robert Godwin
(midfield), the Whirlies are averaging 11 goals per game. Gabe Chauvigne anchors
the Grimsley defense in goal along with Aaron Hales (defense). The Whirlies lost
twice to Northwest in the regular season but now look to stop the three-peat by
continuing their road winning streak.

Last season’s overtime playoff game was deemed by many to be the best lacrosse game
of the entire year. Do not miss the rematch at Northwest Guilford on Friday May 6
at 7:00pm.

  1. Last year’s game was absolutely phenominal with both teams playing their hearts out. It was really a shame that one had to lose…..but oh well.

Put it on them again Whirlies.

  2. Sorry Big Blue but the Vikings are going to crush the Whirlies tonight! Go Vikes!!!!

  3. I hope it is a good game, but I am not sure Grimsley will be able to hang this year. I know they beat Northern and they beat Bishop 7-2 with Bishop’s leading scorer not even suited up for the game. I just think NW Guilford will be too much as I think they are a step better than all other teams in Guilford and Forsyth County, but I could be wrong. I bet it will be a good crowd though.

  4. What a tremendous lacrosse game tonight. Northwest pulls out a nail bitter in the last seconds that was otherwise heading into sudden death overtime. With the score tied at 6, NW scores with around 10 seconds left in regulation. Grimsley gets a frantic last second shot on goal that goes wide left. Final score 7-6. Another classic between these two teams and both fan bases were loud and into it tonight. I liked everything but the outcome.

Good luck to the Vikings in the semi-finals
