Greensboro College is in the hunt for a National Championship……..

from Grandover Golf Resort:

GREENSBORO, NC — Greensboro College currently sits in second place after the second day of the NCAA DIII Golf Championships at Grandover Resort. The Pride began play on day 2 on the “East Course,” five strokes behind the leader, St. John’s University (MN). At the conclusion of day 2, GC now only trails SJU by three strokes, and is four strokes ahead of third place Texas Lutheran University. Methodist University, the defending national champions and USA South rival are tied for fourth place, five strokes behind GC.

After a rocky start, GC caught stride to finish the day with a one over par. “I was a little worried after the first couple holes with some of our mistakes,” Head Coach Dirk Fennie mentioned, “this course isn’t as easy to come back on as some others, but the guys responded really well, and turned out a very solid performance.”

For The Pride, it was freshman Kirk Mitchell (North Wilkesboro, NC/Wilkes Central HS ) turning in the best score of the day with a 71, -1. Mitchell shot par all day long with his lone birdie coming on 14. Josh Nichols (Waxhaw, NC/West Forsyth) made a six stroke turnaround from day 1, shooting even par, 72. Brock Elder (Greensboro, NC/Vandalia Christian) and Connor Kennedy (Siler City, NC/Jordan Matthews High School) each shot one over par, while Ben Nihart (Winston-Salem, NC/Home school) finished with a 77, +5.

“I told the guys that we’re only half way there, and we have to take it one day at a time,” Fennie said. “They have confidence in themselves, and are excited about where they sit,” he added.

What a great job from these guys! If you know coach Dirk Finnie, you can’t help but be happy for him. Super humble guy, works extra hard in many capacities for GC. Hope they pull it off, but either way, He has done a tremendous job with this group!
