Northern Guilford Middle School honors top Athletes and Teams

Let us introduce you to: The Future Stars of Tomorrow…..

Last night Northern Middle held their athletic awards ceremony. Many teams were
honored such as men’s golf, men’s basketball, men’s track, wrestling and men’s
baseball. The ladies of Northern Middle had an awesome year as many of them brought
home conference titles. Women’s softball was conference champs after having an
awesome year going 12-1. Women’s track were conference champs and broke school
records in the 4×100 meter relay, 4×200 meter relay, and 100 meter dash. One name
mentioned who had a hand in all the record breaking and placing 1st in 6 of 7
contests, was Ariel Davis. Another young lady whose name we did not capture placed
1st in 16 of her 17 long distance events. This is evident that our young ladies are
keeping up with the young men!

Our women’s basketball team had a breakout year under the direction of 1st yr coach
David Hawkins. Coach Hawkins has over 15years coaching experience. He is also the
head coach of the football team and has previously coached high school girl’s
basketball. After taking a hiatus from coaching basketball, Coach Hawkins re-entered
the ring and took on the task of re-vamping the girl’s basketball team. Before
Christmas break, the girl’s basketball team had a 1-4 record, having lost to
Northeast Middle (twice), Southeast Middle and Mendenhall. At 1st glance, it seemed
like a repeat of previous years. Coach Hawkins believed in his team and didn’t give
up. After Christmas break, the girls had a new found positive attitude and won 8 of
their last 8 games. On 1/27/11, the girl’s clinched a share of the conference title
after a big, nail biting win against a strong Mendenhall team. The Mendenhall team
was led by sharp shooter Bailey Kargo, who had approx 23 of Mendenhall’s 30 points.

The girl’s basketball team ended the season with a record : 9-4 overall ; 7-1
conference ( Central 5 Conference Co-champions ). This is the 2nd title clinched by
the girl’s basketball team in the school’s existence. The 1st title was won back in
2007. Below you will find some team stats and roster:

  1. Congrats to all the coaches, athletes and parents that have participated at Northern. I think the conference championship total is over 25 in 4 short years now. Best of luck to all the 8th graders moving on to the next level you’ve added your mark to a great young history.
