SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG left fielder Cody Walker(Grimsley High School) has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while teammate Warren Slack(Southwest Guilford High School), a right-hander pitcher, has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from May 9-15.

Walker hit 8-for-16 last week to lead the Spartans to a perfect 4-0 week, including a weekend sweep of The Citadel. The senior from Greensboro recorded a hit in all four games and is currently riding an 11-game hitting streak, the best on the team this season, as UNCG has won 12 of its last 13 games.

He began the week with a 2-for-5 performance at High Point with a double, walk, RBI and run scored. His impressive performance continued over the weekend when he went a combined 6-for-11 at the plate with three doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. On Senior Day Sunday, Walker had three hits, including a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Slack was 1-0 in two appearances last week. He came on in relief on Tuesday in the ninth inning to close out UNCG’s 12-4 win over High Point with one strikeout in an inning of work.

The senior from High Point, N.C., came back on Friday to make the final home start of his career. Slack, who currently leads all active SoCon pitchers with 242 career strikeouts, fanned a career-high 12 batters while limiting The Citadel to one run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings on the mound.

The Spartans will return to action in their final regular-season series at Wofford beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.

  1. well deserved awards for both players.

walker is a team player who has stepped into being one of the hottest hitters in the game.

overcoming a major injury, working hard at the juco level, and waiting for his opportunity at unc-g, walker deserves all he receives as he now is hitting over .310 and riding something like an 11 game hitting streak.

slack just keeps on being slack.

the poker faced, friday starter all year long,,,,slack keeps his team in the game, and hands it over to what has become a strong bullpen for the spartans.

last 3 outings pretty impressive, against strong offensive teams.

the “blue collar spartans” have been on a run of late, because of a whole team full of unselfish players, led by walker, slack and fellow seniors, smith, ray q., hyatt,

    gerringer and barker.

    good luck andstay hot
