After his Spartans were picked to finish ninth in Pre-season polls, UNCG coach Mike Gaski named SoCon Coach of the Year

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Head baseball coach Mike Gaski has been named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in as many days, this time by the media, and UNCG sophomore Trevor Edwards earned second-team honors, the league office announced on Tuesday.(today)

Gaski, who earned Coach of the Year honors on Monday on voting conducted by the coaches, earned the same distinction on Tuesday from the media. He led the Spartans to a 34-18 record this season, including a 22-8 mark in the SoCon to finish a game-behind Elon for the top spot in the league.

Gaski was previously named the SoCon Coach of the Year in 1998 and was also named to the same award twice when UNCG was a member of the Big South.

The Spartans, who weren’t picked to finish higher than ninth in either preseason poll, tied the school record for the most wins in the SoCon since 1998.

After earning first-team honors as a catcher by the coaches on Monday, Edwards was tabbed to the All-SoCon second-team by the media.

Edwards has led the Spartans at the plate this year with a .320 average and a team-high eight home runs. He has knocked in a team-best 48 runs this year and is tied for second in the Southern Conference with 17 doubles.

UNCG will face seventh-seeded Furman on Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
