ASHEVILLE — Aaron Wright can still remember the slow, dejected walk back to the bus with the rest of his Roberson baseball teammates in 2010.

Starting tonight, Wright and five other seniors get the chance to make a new memory in the 4-A Western Regional championship series.

The Mountain Athletic Conference champion Rams (24-4) host Southeast Guilford (26-3) in the 7 p.m. opener to the best-of-three 4-A series.

It is the second straight regional series appearance for Roberson, which lost two games to one to East Forsyth last season.

“Getting that far and losing really sticks with you,” Wright said.

“We’re happy to be back, but we’re not satisfied. I have confidence in all these guys that we can get it done.”

In addition to Wright, the rest of the Roberson seniors are Carson Bryant, Corey Hargus, Alex Ledford, Jonathan Mull and Grant Petty.

“Getting back here has been in the back of our minds all season,” said Bryant (7-2), who has emerged as the ace of the Rams’ pitching staff.

“We had a great team last year, and we’ve got a great team this year. I think the only difference may be that we have a few more (pitchers) this time.”

Ledford increased his own Western North Carolina record for single-season RBIs (56) in Tuesday’s 8-1 win over Porter Ridge and matched the Roberson mark for single-season homers (15). Wright (.538) and Bryant (.500) are batting .500 or better.

The Rams have no less than five future college players in Bryant (UNC Greensboro), Hargus (Walters State), Ledford (UNCG), Wright (UNC Asheville) and junior James Nevant (Notre Dame).
