Johnathan Smith from Guilford College attains All-American status with his efforts at NCAA DIII Track and Field

DELAWARE, Ohio – Guilford College freshman Johnathan Smith (Conyers,
Ga./Salem) won his 200-meter heat in a school-record 21.64 seconds Thursday
at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Smith’s time
ranked second only to Moravian College senior Eric Woodruff, the defending
national champion who won his heat in 21.15 seconds.

By virtue of qualifying for Saturday’s eight-man final, Smith is guaranteed
All-American status, which is awarded to the event’s top-eight finishers by
the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Smith will be the Quakers’ first outdoor track and field All-American in the
school’s NCAA Division III history.

Smith lowered his own school standard of 21.70 seconds, which he set May 15
at the Aggie Classic, hosted by North Carolina A&T State University. The Old
Dominion Athletic Conference’s outdoor 200-meter champion owns the
six-fastest 200 times in Guilford’s recorded track and field history.

The 200 final is scheduled for Saturday (5/28) at 4:05 p.m. Live results can

Smith will try to qualify for Saturday’s 100-meter dash final Friday(today)
when he runs in the preliminaries, scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. His NCAA
provisionally qualifying time of 10.75 seconds ranked 19th among Division
III 100 times this season.
