News Report on last night’s game with SEG-TC Roberson from up in Asheville

Asheville, N.C.–Holmes-Smith Field has been a house of horrors for visiting baseball teams this season.

And Roberson senior Alex Ledford is the biggest boogeyman in the Rams’ lineup, a role he reprised once more Monday.

The UNC Greensboro recruit hit a two-out, walkoff grand slam to provide a 7-3 win over visiting Southeast Guilford in the third and deciding game of the 4-A Western Regional series.

Roberson (26-5), which did not lose a game at home this spring, advances to play Holly Springs (24-2) in the 4-A championship series, which begins Friday in either Raleigh or Zebulon.

Ledford’s grand slam gave him a Western North Carolina record for single-season home runs (17). The former WNC record (16) belonged to 2009 Tuscola graduate Cody Stubbs.

The grand slam also allowed Ledford (62 RBIs) to pass 1995 New Hanover graduate Shawn Gallagher (61) for the NCHSAA single-season record.

“When it hit it, I just started sprinting,” said Ledford, who was holding the home run ball afterwards during interviews.

“I wanted to get home as soon as I could so I could see the rest of my boys.”

But Ledford didn’t.

His shot left no doubt as it soared over the scoreboard in left field at Holmes-Smith. However, as Ledford was rounding the bases, a teammate picked him up in celebratory fashion and carried Ledford out of the base path.

  1. I know for a fact that there is a video tape of this game and every game Southeast played. I have seen the same gentleman at every game with his video camera on a tripod filming the game. I wish I knew who to send it to.
