North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) Announces 2011 All-State College Division Baseball Team
HICKORY, N.C. – The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information
Association (NCCSIA) released its 2011 All-State College Division Baseball
Team Wednesday(today). Mount Olive College, which reached the NCAA Division II
national semifinals, led the way with four selections. The Trojans finished
the year with a 47-10 record and won the 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast
Regional Tournament in addition to the Conference Carolinas regular-season
and tournament titles.
The eighth-annual team consists of non-NCAA Division I student-athletes from
North Carolina colleges and universities. North Carolina sports information
professionals submitted the nominees, and NCCSIA members voted for the
all-state teams, which consist of two starting pitchers, on relief pitcher,
one catcher, five infielders, three outfielders and a designated hitter.
NCCSIA’s all-state softball teams will be released Thursday, June 9.
The starting pitchers on this year’s all-state squad are Mount Olive
sophomore Carter Capps (Kinston, N.C.) and Catawba sophomore Nick Lomascolo
(Mooresville, N.C.). Capps, a 2010 all-state honoree, is a finalist for
NCAA Division II Player of the Year honors after posting a 14-1 record with
a 1.75 earned run average (ERA) and 129 strikeouts. Capps was the Southeast
Region Pitcher of the Year (Daktronics, ABCA and NCBWA) and the MVP of the
2011 Southeast Regional Tournament.
Lomascolo was named 2011 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Pitcher of the Year
as he went 9-3 with a 2.78 ERA and 88 strikeouts. The Division II
All-Southeast Region pick led Catawba to a 41-15 record, the 2011 SAC
regular-season title and an NCAA playoff berth.
UNC Pembroke junior Braxton Lewis (Seven Springs, N.C.) was voted the
all-state’s relief pitcher after allowing just two earned runs all season to
go along with a 7-1 record, a 0.38 earned run average and 51
strikeouts. Lewis,
who did not allow a run in his first 42 and two-thirds innings pitched in
2011, was also a First Team All-Peach Belt Conference and All-Southeast
Region honoree.
Mount Olive junior Michael Knox (Cary, N.C.) picked up all-state honors as
the designated hitter in 2011. Knox was a semifinalist for the Division II
National Player of the Year after ranking second nationally in home runs
(23) and third in slugging percentage (.832). The Trojans’ all-time home
run leader (47) also hit .367 and was a First Team All-Southeast Region pick
by three different organizations (ABCA, NCBWA and Daktronics).
Lenoir-Rhyne senior Brian Dice (Hickory, N.C.) garnered all-state accolades
for the second straight year, including this season as the team’s catcher. The
Second Team All-SAC pick led the Bears in runs scored (41), runs batted in
(36) and slugging percentage (.497). Dice earned 2010 NCCSIA All-State
honors as a designated hitter.
The five infielders on the all-state squad are: Mars Hill senior Michael
Bueker (Cooper City, Fla.), Catawba freshman Chris Dula (Troutman, N.C.),
St. Augustine senior Rashaad Ingram (Savannah, Ga.), Mount Olive junior
Jacob Rogers (Clearwater, Fla.) and Guilford senior Kyle Wooden (Stillwell,
Kan.).
Bueker was a First Team All-SAC honoree in 2011 after leading the league in
batting average (.414) and setting the school single-season record for hits
with 87. Dula, who led Catawba in batting average (.377), hits (81), runs
batted in (62), runs scored (52) and doubles (21), was a First Team All-SAC
honoree and named the SAC Freshman of the Year.
Ingram was the CIAA Player Of The Year and a First Team Division II
Daktronics All-Atlantic Region honoree after leading the nation in stolen
bases (80) and stolen bases per game (1.48). Ingram also finished the year
with a .390 batting average and ranks third in Division II with 72 runs
scored.
Rogers batted .414 with 53 runs scored and 53 RBI. His 25 doubles ranked
seventh in the country and helped him land First Team All-Southeast Region
recognition (Daktronics, ABCA and NCBWA). He was named to the Conference
Carolinas and Southeast Region All-Tournament Teams.
Wooden, the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Year,
ranks fourth in NCAA Division III in batting average (.467) and is the
school’s career leading in hitting (.436).
The 2011 NCCSIA All-State Baseball College Division outfield consists of UNC
Pembroke junior Josh Haley (Pinehurst, N.C.), Wingate junior Dodson
McPherson (Graham, N.C.) and Mount Olive senior Jason Simone (Utica, N.Y.).
Haley, a 2011 All-Peach Belt Conference and All-Southeast Region honoree,
was the only player to start all 56 games for UNC Pembroke, which went 44-12
and earned an NCAA playoff berth and the league tournament title. He hit
.354 with eight home runs and 43 RBI and finished second in the conference
in runs scored (61) and hits (81).
McPherson was the 2011 SAC and the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Player
of the Year and is one of eight finalists for the Tino Martinez Award, given
to the Division II Player of the Year. McPherson led the conference in hits
(92), home runs (17), RBI (78), runs scored (65), triples (five) and
slugging percentage (.726) and helped the Bulldogs win the SAC Tournament
and advance to the regional tournament.
Simone was a second team all-region honoree and named to the Conference
Carolinas and NCAA Division II Southeast Region All-Tournament Teams. He
led the Trojans in batting average (.422) and hits (84) in 2011.
Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals
from North Carolina’s NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent
institutions for the purpose of promoting college athletics in the
state. Membership
is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference
located in North Carolina whose responsibilities include sports information.
