Hoppers Step Up to the Plate to Help the Hungry
The Grasshoppers accept the challenge posed by Northern Division rival, the Delmarva Shorebirds
As part of the 2011 All-Star Game, the Delmarva Shorebirds and Perdue
Farms have developed a community food drive contest for the member teams
of the South Atlantic League. Each team is challenged to raise the
equivalent of 5,000 meals; completed through a combination of volunteer
hours, collection of canned food items and raising monetary funds.
Of course, the Grasshoppers have accepted the challenge and will help
end the fight against hunger in the Greensboro community! Upon reaching
5,000 meals, Perdue Farms will award Greensboro Urban Ministries a
$1,000 grant from the Arthur W. Perdue Foundation. The contest has been
running from Opening Day and will end Sunday, June 12. Grant winners
will be announced at the South Atlantic League All-Star Game in Delmarva
on Tuesday, June 21.
The Hoppers invaded Greensboro Urban Ministries in the months of April,
May and June. Front office staff members and players served lunch in
“Potter’s Kitchen” and sorted food in the warehouse.
As a final push, the Urban Ministries truck will be parked at the Plaza
Gate Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11. Everyone attending games
that weekend is encouraged to bring a canned food donation to fill the
truck. These canned food donations will be used to fill emergency
assistance grocery bags for families and individuals in need. With the
summer months upon us, Greensboro Urban Ministry anticipates an increase
in the already growing demand on food assistance as children are home
from school and unable to receive school lunches.
