MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Florida Marlins announced that two Jacksonville Suns were named the Florida Marlins Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for May earlier this week.

Suns centerfielder Kevin Mattison was named the Player of the Month, based on his outstanding play in May where he hit .348 in 27 games, collecting 39 hits with four triples and three home runs. Mattison continued to anchor the top spot of the batting order for the Suns, and posted a .421 on-base percentage. Mattison was selected by the Marlins in the 28th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of UNC-Asheville, and was also named to the Southern League South Division All-Star team earlier this week.

Earning Pitcher of the Month honors was Brad Hand. Hand, who was promoted earlier this week from Jacksonville to the major leagues, went 3-0 with a 3.21 ERA in May. The Suns did not lose in any of Hand’s starts during the month, and he was also named to the Southern League South Division All-Star team. Hand was selected by the Marlins in the second round of the 2008 First-Year Player draft out of Chaska High School in Chaska, Minn.
