Saturday at the Pinecrest High School Air Raid Classic.

More than 200 players representing 15 different high schools participated in the
event, which also served as a qualifier for the Mel Kiper Jr. 7on7U National
Championship Series.
The 7-on-7 tournaments have gained popularity in recent years. They put seven
offensive skill players against seven defenders in a passing-only competition. Games
are played on a 45-yard field and consist of two 20-minute halves. There are no
offensive or defensive linemen, players wear only helmets and no pads, and tackling
is not permitted.
The four teams with the most victories Saturday – Jack Britt, Scotland, Pinecrest
and Ben L. Smith – qualified to compete in the Mel Kiper Jr. 7on7U National
Championship in July at Washington, D.C.

The tournament, held Saturday at the Morganton Road Sports Complex, does not charge
an entry fee for teams to compete.
Some 7-on-7 events, however, have come under scrutiny lately. ESPN recently reported
on its “Outside The Lines,” program that the NCAA has assigned seven employees to
scrutinize some 7-on-7 competitions that are being used more to showcase talent to
recruiters than improving team performance.
