Sean Geoghegan(Southwest Guilford HS) throws no-hitter for High Point’s Post 87 Legion team last week

THOMASVILLE — Sean Geoghegan had no idea just exactly how good an evening on the mound he was having. In fact, he said it probably helped that he didn’t know.

Geoghegan threw a no-hitter in leading High Point American Legion Post 87 past Eastern Randolph Post 81 10-0 in seven innings in a pivotal Area III North game last Thursday in Finch Field.

He allowed just two of the 23 batters he faced to reach base — both by errors — while striking out nine and walking none in helping High Point (12-6, 10-5) earn its 11th win in 13 games.

“He’s been our go-to guy,” coach Rob Shore said. “He’s absolutely owned that role. He makes the team put it in play. He throws strikes and makes us play defense. He doesn’t leave any room for mistakes, and (defense) is one thing that we’ve been doing well.”

Geoghegan (5-0) struck out six of the first 13 batters he faced and retired 14 batters in a row during one stretch, while Post 87 steadily pulled away offensively, breaking open a 2-0 game in the fourth and seventh innings.

“I actually didn’t know — and it’s probably better I didn’t know,” Geoghegan, a rising senior lefty at Southwest Guilford, said of the no-hitter. “I just kind of did my thing and did my best, instead of thinking about it.

“My fastball was working, and my curveball was working most of the time — a few of them got away,” he added. “I’ll probably have to work on that.”

  1. Sean works hard to improve his game and the improvement is noticeable. He should have a great senior season at SWG and will probably have opportunities to play at the next level. Congratulations Sean on your continued development.
