Keenan Allen(Northern Guilford HS) named to Paul Hornung Award Watch List

from the Cal.com website:

(BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA) – Keenan Allen(Northern Guilford High School) became the latest Cal football player to receive preseason recognition when he was one of 50 players named Monday to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse.

The honor is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) to the most versatile player in major college football. The award was created by the LSC in January 2010 with the support of the Golden Boy himself, Paul Hornung, a native and lifelong resident of Louisville and member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

Cal’s sophomore wide receiver had previously been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list for its Wide Receiver Trophy and is a second-team preseason All-Pac12 selection of Phil Steele.

Allen racked up the honors in a record-setting rookie season as a freshman in 2010 when he was a fourth-team Freshman All-American according to Steele and an honorable mention pick of College Football News. Scout also honored him as a second-team All-Pac-10 choice as an all-purpose player, while he was a fourth-team All-Pac-10 pick of Steele at wide receiver.

Allen posted one of the top campaigns by a true freshman wide receiver in school history, setting a single-season Cal record for receptions with 46 catches for 490 yards, surpassing current Philadelphia Eagles player DeSean Jackson’s previous record of 38.

  1. He put up some very good numbers at Buffalo under the coaching of Turner Gill when Maynard was a sophomore and he was the #1 Cal QB coming out of Bears’ Spring Practice, so we will see how he does this year versus a very competitive Pac 10/12 with Oregon, Southern Cal, UCLA, Washington, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford and the like….If I just rattled off all of the Pac 10 members by memory, then I deserve a weekend bonus….Did I leave anyone out?

  2. I follow the PAC 10/12…big time USC fan. I saw that CAL had named Maynard starting QB. I never got a chance to see him play in high school, so I was just curious. CAL is being picked to finish at the bottom of the PAC 12, but they are talented on offense. Maynard is a question mark to a lot of CAL and PAC 12 fans.
