Update on Brett Bowden, the HS football player with Down Syndrome and what he can and can not do this season

Hobbton High School and the family of Brett Bowden reached an agreement Thursday that will allow the 19-year-old junior to lead his football team onto the field on game day and participate in pre- and post-game activities, according to a statement from the Sampson County School System.

Bowden, who has Down Syndrome, has aged out of high school sports by the letter of the law. A Facebook campaign to let him play garnered tens of thousands of fans and media attention this week.

In the statement, the school system said Bowden’s parents essentially agreed that his place on the team could conform to a state Board of Education rule.
