College Women’s Soccer Final – Rutgers-Newark 2, Guilford 1

RALEIGH, N.C. – Liana Abreu’s goal in the 58th minute snapped a 1-1 tie and gave the University of Rutgers-Newark a 2-1 win over Guilford College at the Meredith College Classic Saturday.

The Quakers (1-1) opened the scoring with a first-half tally by Kat Adams, Guilford’s starting goalie for the past three seasons. With the Quakers’ bench depleted by injury, Adams made a rare field appearance while senior Amy Baker tended the cage. Adams found the back of the net in the 20th minute, which staked Guilford to a 1-0 halftime lead.

Michelle Gromashschuk tied the game early in the second half before Abreu’s game winner. Rutgers-Newark’s defense limited Guilford to one shot after taking the lead, which goalie Danielle Griscom stopped for one of her six saves.

Guilford meets Salem Sunday at 3:15 p.m. in the four-team tournament’s final game. The Scarlet Raiders (1-1) play Meredith at 1:00 p.m.
