College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 0, N.C. Wesleyan 0 (2 OT)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College and North Carolina Wesleyan College played to a 0-0 draw Wednesday night in the Quakers’ home opener at the Armfield Athletic Center. Both teams enjoyed strong scoring chances and both goaltenders came up with critical saves in the final minutes of overtime.

Guilford (1-1-1) had the better of the play in the first half as junior midfielder Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) had a number of solid scoring opportunities narrowly miss the goal. The teams played evenly in the second half before the Battling Bishops Owen White was sent off in the 68th minute, which left N.C. Wesleyan down a man for the rest of the match.

After the ejection, the Battling Bishops picked up their offensive intensity, especially as forward Omar Kanten asserted himself up top. The teams combined for only two second-half shots on goal and Gomez headed a cross from close range off the post.

Overtime saw more of the same, although both goalies made exemplary stops as time wound down. Guilford’s Peter Truitt (3 saves) deflected a rocket off the boot of Leifur Kristjansson in the 109th minute enough to send the shot into the crossbar. North Carolina Wesleyan keeper Alberto Faisca made a big stop on a point-blank shot by Gomez, his 12th of the game, with 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Faisca notched the shutout with nine saves.

Guilford held a 20-19 edge in shots and had 10 corner kicks to the Battling Bishops’ two.

The Quakers are back in action Sunday (9/11) at 1:00 p.m. against visiting Berry College.
