GREENSBORO — It started with a 97-yard touchdown run followed 13 seconds later by a fumble return for a score. If Williams High School wasn’t shell-shocked enough in the first quarter, Northern Guilford scored 1 minute, 30 seconds later on a fumble recovery in the end zone.
That was just the beginning for the error-plagued Bulldogs as they dropped a 56-0 decision to opportunistic and athletic Northern Guilford on Friday night.
The contest was the Mid-State 3-A Conference opener for both teams. It looked more like a season opener for the outmanned Bulldogs (3-2).
Williams fumbled the ball six times, losing three, and had one interception in the first half to trail 49-0 at the intermission.
“The early fumbles turned the game around,” Northern Guilford coach Johnny Roscoe said. “Those turned the tide of the game. It was 7-0 and all of a sudden I looked at the scoreboard and it was 21-0.”
Williams coach David Green talked with his team for approximately 15 minutes after the game. When he emerged from the huddle he said: “You can’t turn the ball over as much as we did. Six turnovers and a blocked punt — that’s at least what we had in the first half … Even playing Turrentine Middle School, we couldn’t do that and win.”
