Pride Women’s Soccer Wins Tight Contest Over Marymount

The Pride women’s soccer team continued their home win streak with a 2-1 win over the Marymount University Saints. With the win, The Pride are now 3-2 on the season and a perfect 3-0 at Pride Field.

The Pride opened the scoring early as freshman Sarah Lang found an opening in the defense and fired a strong shot on target. Marymount’s freshman goalkeeper Victoria Wyand was able to make the save, but sophomore Mary Randolph jumped on the rebound to give Greensboro the early lead.

Greensboro would hold their lead until the 42nd minute when Saint sophomore Shannon Bisselink found junior Katie Hamelin in the box. Hamelin took a low, hard shot past a diving Shireen Unvala to tie the game just before the break.

Possession and opportunities were even early in the second half, but it was Sarah Lang who was again the hero for The Pride, finding the net for a team high seventh time this season in the 60th minute. Junior Meredith Kelly provided an excellent service from the right side of the goal box and found Lang, who headed the ball past the keeper for the game winning goal. Lang has scored the game winner in all three of Greensboro’s wins this season.

Lang also led The Pride in shots, tallying seven for the game and placing three on target. Sarah Hopkins added three, while Beth Ward and Randolph took two a piece. Hamelin led the Saints in shots with three. Krysti Patient, Julie Fioramonti and Hannh Boswell each took two shots. The Pride outshot the Saints 18-14, but both teams earned four corners. In goal, both Wyand and Unvala tallied eight saves.

The Pride will be back in action tomorrow at Pride Field against Washington and Lee at 4:00 p.m. The men’s soccer team plays their home opener against Roanoke immediately prior to the women’s game.
