Ragsdale puts it into overdrive versus Parkland

from former News and Record writer Craig T. Greenlee, at the Winston-Salem Journal and on line at www2.journalnow.com:

The Winston-Salem Parkland Mustangs took a nosedive in their Homecoming encounter, as they hosted the Ragsdale Tigers…..Here’s the inside on Ragsdale from that game, from Craig T. Greenlee…..Ragsdale over WS Parkland and Grimsley-grad Dee Bell’s Mustangs, 56-7……

Ragsdale entered the game with a mindset to erase memories of last week’s 35-14 home loss to Greensboro Page. The Tigers erased all doubts about this game with a four-touchdown barrage in the second quarter to build an insurmountable 35-0 halftime lead. Running back Marquez Eleazer started the onslaught with a 14-yard scoring run.

The Tigers’ special teams set up the next touchdown when Parkland punter Brandon Dawkins was tackled after fielding a high snap from center.

Four plays later, Ragsdale dipped into its bag of tricks. Quarterback Garrison Herndon threw a pass behind the line of scrimmage to wide receiver Colon Herndon, who in turn fired a 32-yard pass downfield to Anthony Stewart for a touchdown.

The Tigers added another score minutes later when Garrison Herndon hit Erik Romer on a quick slant pass for a touchdown. Eleazer ended the second quarter by scoring his second touchdown of the night. He caught a screen pass from Herndon and weaved his way through Parkland’s defense on a 30-yard touchdown.

The Tigers rushed for 148 yards. Eleazer finished with 103 rushing yards on 18 carries. Garrison Herndon had a near-perfect game passing, completing 10 of 12 for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

“We felt like our kids would bounce back from last week’s loss,” coach Tommy Norwood of Ragsdale said. “They wanted to come out, execute, play to the best of their ability, and that’s just what they did. It’s always a great feeling to start the conference part of the season with a win. You always like to be sitting on top (in the conference) rather than trying to climb your way up (in the standings).”
