Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 3, Emory 0

ATLANTA, Ga. – Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) scored twice and Greg Carnovale once in Guilford College’s first recorded men’s soccer victory over Emory University Sunday. The Quakers (3-3-1) snapped a two-match losing streak with their first win over the Eagles (3-4), who entered the contest with a 4-0-1 record versus Guilford.

The teams played a scoreless first half thanks in large part to the play of Guilford senior goalie Peter Truitt, who made five of his seven saves in the opening period.

Emory maintained its pressure in the second half, but Guilford struck in the 61st minute when senior Greg Carnovale headed in a long cross from Tamer El-Amoor for a 1-0 Quakers’ lead.

Eight minutes later Gomez drove into the penalty box and unleashed a shot past Emory goalie Alex Wong for a 2-0 Guilford advantage. Gomez put the game away with his team-leading fifth tally of the season in the 86th minute, off an assist from Eto’O Kemda-Kemtsop.

Emory outshot Guilford, 25-9, but Truitt was equal to the task with seven saves in his third shutout of the season. The senior moved into fourth place on the Quakers’ career shutouts list with seven.

Gomez, a junior, moved into a share of sixth place on Guilford’s career goal scoring list with 24 tallies in 46 matches. He also sits sixth with 58 career points.

Guilford visits defending national runner up Lynchburg College Saturday (9/24) at 7:00 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
