Big upset down in Charlotte, as Ardrey Kell knocks Independence from the ranks of the unbeatens and stuns Patriots

Ardrey Kell’s 23-21 win over Independence on Friday, its first victory over the perennial state power, came after a brutally physical performance from the Knights’ defense, led by Romeo Okwara, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound linebacker who chose Notre Dame over North Carolina.

It came after the Knights had a punt return for a touchdown called back, but later had another one that counted. It came after Independence threw 49 passes for the game and ran 13 plays inside the Knights 40 when the Patriots were down by two.

And, most important, it came after controversy: An apparent go-ahead 66-yard scoring play by Independence with 2 minutes, 33 seconds left kicked off a huge celebration at the Patriots’ home field – only to be called back for an illegal shift.
