MEBANE — With a quick wit and wry smile, Eastern Alamance football coach John Kirby isn’t usually the type of coach that goes the fire-and-brimstone rout.
But after Friday night’s 38-19 loss to fellow Mid-State 3-A Conference heavyweight Northern Guilford, Kirby stood in the center of a thick ring of green jerseys, his voiced raised, barking out a challenge.
“We’re really young in some places,” Kirby said. “… I’m not sure they know how to be a leader because they’ve never really been in that spot. But they’ve got to learn.”
Following the loss to the Nighthawks, which snapped a 13-game winning streak in Mebane, the Eagles face the reality, that while the thick of the conference slate is at hand, they’re a team with as many questions as answers.
“Hopefully this is a wake up call and we can pick it back up,” quarterback Robbie Lanier said.
The victory is the Nighthawks’ third straight in the key league series.
Northern Guilford (4-1 overall, 2-0 Mid-State 3-A), the reigning Class 3-AA state champion, weathered a wobbly start — falling behind 7-0 — before finding the formula to crack the Eagles’ perennially strong defense.
Nighthawks running back T.J. Logan carried 29 times for 252 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns.
