GREENSBORO, N.C. – Annika Rindestedt and Suvi Piipponen scored first-half goals to lead visiting Averett University to a 2-0 soccer win at Guilford College Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars (5-1) used a strong defensive effort to hold the Quakers (6-3-2) to just one shot and end Guilford’s seven-match unbeaten streak.
Rindestedt got Averett on the board in the fifth minute when she took a short pass from Johanne Ingebritsen and scored from seven yards out. The Cougars doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Piipponen’s corner kick deflected off a Guilford defender into the goal.
Guilford tried to press forward more in the second half, but managed little sustained offensive possession. The Cougars had some solid second-half scoring chances, but Quakers’ netminder Amy Baker kept Averett scoreless in the period with eight of her 11 saves. The Cougars’ Pernilla Milton had a goal in the 90th minute taken off the board due to a hand ball.
Averett outshot Guilford, 17-1, and had seven of the game’s eight corner kicks.
Guilford visits Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Randolph College Wednesday (9/28) at 7:00 p.m.
