Men’s Soccer Final – Lynchburg 1, Guilford 0

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Thomas Moran knocked in a cross from Jordan Clark in the 59th minute to lift Lynchburg College (3-4-2, 1-0-2 ODAC) to a 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer match Saturday night. Hornets’ goalie Michael Releford made five saves, three in the second half, to preserve the shutout.

The league contest featured eight cards and 33 fouls. Lynchburg’s Trevor Davis and Guilford’s Tamer El-Amoor were sent off early in the second half, which meant the teams played a man down for the final 40 minutes. In addition, both squads had an assistant coach assessed red cards.

The Quakers (3-4-1, 0-2 ODAC) had a number of solid second-half scoring chances, but Releford made excellent stops on shots by Guilford’s Ronnie Castellanos and Drew Gunter to preserve the shutout. Guilford’s Freddy Gomez hit a free kick from 25 yards out in the 84th minute that just cleared the crossbar.

Guilford owned a 16-15 edge in shots. The Quakers’ Peter Truitt made four saves in goal.

Saturday’s match ended a four-game road swing for Guilford, which returns home to host crosstown-rival Greensboro College Wednesday (9/28) at 7:00 p.m.
