A 28-yard field goal from Rob Styers with eight seconds left lifted Thomasville to a stunning 38-35 victory over High Point Central at A.J. Simeon Stadium on Monday night.

Leading 21-0 halfway through the second quarter, Thomasville surrendered three touchdowns in a little over four minutes and went into halftime up 28-21. A late Bison score tied the game at 35, setting the stage for Styers’s heroics.

“I had so much adrenaline going,” Styers said. “I figured we could get a touchdown at the end, but I had the responsibility to kick the field goal and I had to deliver.”

A game that began as a defensive struggle quickly became a back-and-forth shootout between the Bulldogs and Bison. Three first-quarter turnovers – two by Thomasville and one by Central – prevented either team from gaining an early rhythm.

The Bulldogs opened the contest with an 80-yard kickoff return by Quindale Williams. Two plays later, a fumbled snap was recovered by Bison linebacker Rubin Crosby inside their own 10 yard line.

After the teams exchanged punts on the next two possessions, a seven-play, 44-yard drive by Central was thwarted when Zerrick Baker was stopped a yard shy of the first down on 4th-and-5. Both quarterbacks threw interceptions on the ensuing drives, with Thomasville ultimately getting the ball at its own 13 once the dust settled.
