HIGH POINT — Despite a tough challenge from Westchester Country Day, the Wesleyan Christian boys soccer team showed why it is one of the best teams in the state.

Senior midfielder Sam McBride had two goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Brandt Bronico added two goals, and junior forward Craver Stamey contributed one goal and two assists to help lead the Trojans past the visiting Wildcats 8-1 on Monday evening.

Wesleyan (13-0), ranked No. 1 among state 3A private schools, built a 3-0 halftime lead on a penalty kick by McBride with 24:58 left, a goal by Stamey on a cross wide to the left with 22:35 left, and a goal by Bronico on a bouncing ball through the box with 13:55 left.

Westchester (12-3), which dropped from No. 1 to No. 4 in this week’s 2A private schools poll, scored its lone goal in the second half when senior Tyler Thompson booted in a rebound off senior Lasse Palomaki’s free kick with 15:05 left.

“I’m pleased with the way we played,” Wesleyan head coach Scott Reitnour said. “I like how we moved the ball. I think we demonstrated good patience in attacking and found opportunities to play wide and go inside. We were able to crack the nut fairly early with that penalty kick, and I think that helped us along a little bit.”

  1. GDS has a stronger senior class than Wesleyan. Wesleyan has stronger junior and sophomore classes than GDS. So it’s a toss-up for Friday.
