Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Greensboro 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Justin Torrence’s goal with 11:20 left in regulation lifted Guilford College to a 2-2 soccer draw with Greensboro College Wednesday night at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.

Torrence came forward on a Freddy Gomez corner kick, collected loose ball in the box and banged it home for his first tally of the season. The score capped Guilford’s (3-4-2) rally from a 2-0 second-half deficit and forced extra time.

Both teams had good scoring chances in overtime with Guilford getting the better of the play in the final 10-minute period. After Greensboro’s Tino Benitez put a shot just over the goal in the 93rd minute, Guilford’s Gomez bounced a blast off the crossbar with 1:08 left in the first overtime. Guilford’s Chris Gillespie just missed the goal early in the second extra frame, but Greensboro’s Colby Johnson had the best scoring chance in the 108th minute. Crisp passing in the offensive zone enabled Johnson to rip a shot from 15 yards out, which Guilford goalie Peter Truitt turned away with two hands for his third and final save of the game.

Greensboro’s Joe Peluso gave the Pride (1-3-3) an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute and doubled the advantage 50 minutes later when he converted a feed from Patrick Hayes.

Guilford struck back just over two minutes later when senior Greg Carnovale tallied his third goal of the season.

The Quakers held an 18-11 edge in shots and had 10 of the game’s 12 corner kicks. Woody Wilder made seven saves in goal for Greensboro.
