College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Va. Wesleyan 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) and Chris Matteo scored first-half goals in Guilford College’s 2-0 men’s soccer win at Virginia Wesleyan College Tuesday night. The victory marked the Quakers’ (5-4-2, 2-2 ODAC) first win over their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rivals since 1999 and ended the Marlins’ 13-match unbeaten streak with Guilford at 13 games (12-0-1).

Gomez opened the scoring with his team-leading seventh goal of the year in the 20th minute. The junior drilled a shot into the left corner of the goal to give the hosts an early lead. Matteo doubled the advantage with one second left in the first half when he scored off a Michael Robles assist.

The Marlins owned a 21-17 edge in shots, but only five Virginia Wesleyan shots made it on goal, all of which were stopped by Quakers’ goalie Peter Truitt. With his fourth shutout of the year, Truitt moved into third place on Guilford’s career shutouts list with eight. The Marlins’ Jay Coble had seven stops in goal, four in the second half.

Guilford returns home to host league-rival Eastern Mennonite University Friday night (10/7) at 7:00 p.m.
