HP Central Bison get past Parkland last night and HP Andrews(7-0) rolls over Trinity Bulldogs

HIGH POINT – High Point Central certainly didn’t play its best offensive game of this football season. Far from it. But with a couple of good drives and a very strong defensive effort, it pieced together enough to pick up a much-needed Piedmont Triad 4A Conference win.

“A win is a win is a win is a win,” coach Wayne Jones said with a relieved smile, following his team’s 12-2 win Friday over Parkland in A.J. Simeon Stadium. “I’ll take a win – an ugly win – over a close loss any day.”

The Bison (3-5, 1-2 PTC) moved the ball well offensively but struggled with a plethora of miscues — including two interceptions, two fumbles lost, costly penalties and a number of wild snaps (one of which led to a safety).

Central, in spite of the mistakes, totaled 318 yards of total offense – scoring on 15-yard touchdown runs by junior quarterback Justin Johnson in the second and third quarters – and absolutely shut down Parkland on defense.

“Our guys have done a great job of being aggressive and just attacking the ball,” Jones said of the defense. “We’re getting some people in the right place now. They didn’t allow any big plays, and I can’t say enough about them.”

Senior running back Zerrick Baker ran for 106 yards while Johnson completed 15 of 31 passes for 155 yards to lead the Bison. After allowing the safety on a bad snap in the first, Central rallied with a seven-play, 70-yard scoring drive.

TRINITY – So far, so good.

The unbeaten and state-ranked T.W. Andrews football team won its second straight PAC-6 2A cakewalk with a 54-7 romp at Trinity on Friday.

The Bulldogs were no match for the Raiders, as Andrews held Trinity to minus-23 yards of total offense in the first half. The Raiders led 28-0 at halftime, and Trinity couldn’t mount any sort of comeback after that.

Sophomore running back Marquell Cartwright ran for 87 yards and four TDs to lead Andrews (7-0, 2-0), off to its best start since 1994. The real star, however, was its defense, which was absolutely suffocating.

“Our quarterback made some good reads and got the ball where we needed it to go,” Trinity coach Troy Whitman said. “But their speed just ate us up. At the skill positions, they’re just fast. You can’t coach it, you can’t make up for it. It’s a killer.”

It was definitely a Bulldog killer Friday night. Trinity forced Andrews to punt on its first possession, but Tiquan McClain recovered a fumbled pitch to set the Raiders up on the Bulldogs’ 5-yard line.

Roderick Campbell rumbled in two plays later for the score, and the rout was on. Cartwright tacked on two more touchdowns to put the Raiders up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
