Western Guilford puts the sting into Southern Alamance, with the Hornets’ 19-7 win on Friday night

MT. HERMON — Danny Barham’s 78-yard touchdown run off a screen pass gave the Southern Alamance homecoming crowd something to cheer about in the opening minutes of the second half. It was about the only offensive success the Patriots had in a 19-7 loss to Western Guilford on Friday night in a Metro Conference game.

Southern Alamance missed out on two first-half scoring opportunities, that, if successful, might have altered the outcome.

They failed to score from the Western Guilford 20-yard line after the Hornets took the opening kickoff and scored for a 6-0 lead. Later, Southern Alamance (1-7 overall, 0-3 Metro Conference) drove to the Western Guilford 6, but missed a 24-yard field goal.

“We had a little success and didn’t get in,” Southern Alamance coach Henry Trevathan said. “They tightened up and kept us out. They came out and did what they were supposed to do and we didn’t. They played hard and they played well.”

Western Guilford coach Chris Causey liked the way his team (3-5, 3-1) held on defense and then responded offensively after the Patriots’ threats.

“We controlled the football,” he said. “We had the opening drive and then held them and scored before halftime for the 12-0 lead. That was two good football teams that are better than their records.”

The Hornets’ opening drive consumed six plays, culminating in quarterback Josh Thompson’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Mark Pettit.

Tray Miller scored on an 11-yard run for a 12-0 lead with 1:09 to play before intermission.

Miller ran for 157 yards on 23 carries as the Hornets rushed for 234 yards. Thompson completed 8 of 11 passes for 101 yards.
