Volleyball Splits Saturday Tri-Match

The Greensboro College volleyball team knocked off Mary Baldwin 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 25-15,18-25, 15-7) but lost to North Carolina Wesleyan 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at home. The matches marked the final home games for The Pride in 2011.

Greensboro got off to a slow start on the day, dropping the first set to the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin, 25-21. The Pride rebounded with decisive 25-17 and 25-15 set wins in two and three to take a 2-1 lead. Mary Baldwin fought back in the fourth, grabbing a 25-18 win to force a final set. The fifth set was all Greensboro, though, as The Pride ran away with a 15-8 win.

Liz Widenhouse led the attack for Greensboro with 17 kills, followed by 13 for Danielle Simpson and 11 for Morgan Hooks. Setter Dana Sandknop provided 45 of the 51 assists. Defensively, libero Siarra Cates recorded a team high 21 digs with Simpson adding 19 and Widenhouse (11) and Sandknop (10) also reaching double figures.

The Pride dug themselves into an early hole again in the late match against the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan, losing the first two sets 25-17 and 25-12. Greensboro hung tough in the third set but came out on the short end of a 25-21 decision.

Hooks knocked home a team high nine kills while Sandknop dished out 22 assists. Cates was the lone member of the Pride to hit double digits in digs, finishing the match with ten.

The split leaves Greensboro with a record of 9-21 overall and 4-11 in the USA South. The Pride will hit the road on October 25 for a 7 p.m. match at Averett.
