Women’s Soccer: Greensboro 3 Southern Virginia 1

Despite falling behind early, The Pride found their offensive stroke late in the first half and found a way to win for Greensboro’s three departing seniors. The win moves the team to 10-4-1 on the season and 7-2 at Pride Field.

In front of a large crowd at Pride Field for Senior Day, Greensboro began the game on an emotional high, but conceded a quick goal off the foot of Melanee Guymon. After settling down and finding their groove, however, The Pride took control of the game and dominated possession throughout the first half. Time and time again, Greensboro had great opportunities, but several great saves by Southern Virginia goalkeeper Makenzie Lundquist, and some unlucky bounces over the crossbar, kept The Pride off the scoreboard.

Greensboro would not take no for an answer and finally found the equalizer in the 33rd minute. Junior Sarah Hopkins collected the ball near the top of the eighteen yard box and played a precise ball to sophomore Tiffany Walters inside the box. Walters took a hard shot to the right side and tied the game at one a piece.

Ten minutes later, Walters found the go ahead goal as well, this time assisted by junior Meredith Kelly. Kelly played a long ball across the top of the box, which Walters took on one touch before firing past the keeper for her second goal of the game. Riding thier momentum, The Pride found the goal again just two minutes later. Freshman Allison Gibson went unassisted into the box, dribbled passed two defenders and placed the ball out of the reach of the goalkeeper to complete the scoring.

The Pride played strong defense in the second half, allowing just one shot, and controlled possession to seal the victory. Nineteen different players saw the field in the victory.

Greensboro dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Knights 23-7 and holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Leading scorer Sarah Lang took 10 shots and put four on target, while Gibson took five and also placed four on target. All three seniors played 70+ minutes in their second-to-last game at Pride Field.

The women will be back in action for their final game of the season on Friday, October 28th, for a conference match-up with Methodist. The game is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Pride Field.
