College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, Emory & Henry 2

EMORY, Va. – Emma Gunn put away 16 kills and hit .542 in Guilford College’s 3-2 volleyball win at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Emory & Henry College Tuesday night. Gunn led a trio of Quakers with double-digit kills as Guilford (11-14, 5-5 ODAC) won for the ninth time in 12 matches.

Emory & Henry (14-10, 5-5 ODAC) hit a blistering .407 in the first set to take a 25-16 victory. The Quakers battled back in the second with a 25-21 win in a set that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. The Wasps took the third set, 25-22, but failed to put the match away as Guilford took the fourth set, 25-23. That set saw 11 ties and six lead changes and no team with more than a four-point edge. The Quakers jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the decisive fifth set, only to see Emory & Henry draw to within 14-13 before an attacking error gave Guilford the winning point.

Mary Moody contributed her team-leading sixth double-double of the season for Guilford with 12 kills and 14 digs. Laura Kopald had 10 putaways on .250 hitting and Brittany DeCesare added eight kills. Taylor Whitley was solid with five kills on .571 hitting, plus five digs and 43 assists. Malikah French had four kills, four service aces and four blocks. Taylor Phillips chipped in with 15 digs.

Emory & Henry’s Jamie Cockerham led all students with 19 kills, to which she added 19 digs, three service aces and three blocks. Morgan Grant contributed 14 kills and eight digs. Sam Lucado had five of Emory & Henry’s 16 service aces and 14 digs.

Guilford closes the regular season Thursday (10/27) at Salem College.
